Carrier supplied Athens with 635 chillers ranging from the smallest Aquasnap models to large centrifugal machines, more than 3,600 fan coil units, twenty-two 50 series packaged units, around 1150 simple split systems and 47 ducted units to projects integral to the Games.
Some of the venues air-conditioned by Carrier included: The Athens Organising Committee, Olympic Village, International Broadcast Centre, The Olympic Hall at Galatsi, The Pankritio Stadium at Heraklion and the Olympic Equestrian Centre in Markopoulo.
Having commissioned the equipment, the Carrier Service team of skilled technicians provided round the clock support, monitoring conditions remotely, and ensuring every system operated reliably and efficiently. Vital, factory-authorised spare parts were made available from strategically located depots, just in case. And after the Games are long gone the buildings serve as homes, colleges or schools. Efficient transportation is critical to the success of the Olympic Games. The daily transfer of thousands of athletes, journalists, spectators and others presents a real challenge. Here too Carrier’s role is key. A tram network covering 23.7 km connected the centre of Athens to the bay area and southern suburbs. Carrier delivers cooling for its offices and terminus. The metro system has also been extended, with Carrier cooling the majority of the stations.
Like the athletes participating in the Olympic Games, Carrier equipment arrived in Athens from countries all around the world. Commercial chillers, residential units and transportation cooling products were manufactured in facilities in France, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States comfortably on time.
