Seasonal Efficiency Matters

Our air-cooled chillers, water-cooled chillers and air handling units are fully eco-design compliant and focussed on seasonal efficiency.

Carrier’s chillers, heat pumps and air handling units are already in line with the European Ecodesign regulation requirements on energy efficiency.

New Metrics Because Seasonal Efficiency Matters

With all new buildings expected to be close to zero energy by January 2021, calculations of the energy efficiency of buildings require accurate indicators of the efficiency of their equipment. These indicators must be representative of actual operations throughout the year, measuring the performance of equipment on a seasonal basis. The latest European regulations apply to chillers in comfort and industrial process cooling applications, and to heat pumps:

  • – Regulation 2016/2281
  • – Regulation 2015/1095
  • – Under regulation 813/2013

European Regulation 1253/2014 applies to air handling units.

Chillers for Comfort Cooling

Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers intended for comfort cooling applications have to meet the requirements of Eco Design directive 2016/2281.

This mandates minimum levels of energy efficiency expressed both as a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and primary energy efficiency. The SEER can be calculated at either of two temperature ranges; 12/7 for fan coil systems and 23/18 for chilled beam / underfloor cooling systems.

Chillers for Process Cooling

Air-cooled and water-cooled chillers intended for comfort cooling applications have to meet the requirements of Eco Design directive 2016/2281.

This mandates minimum levels of energy efficiency expressed both as a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and primary energy efficiency. The SEER can be calculated at either of two temperature ranges; 12/7 for fan coil systems and 23/18 for chilled beam / underfloor cooling systems.

Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps rated up to 400 kW have to meet the performance criteria laid down in Eco design directive 813/2013.

This specifies a minimum acceptable Seasonal Coefficient of Performance Ratio (SCOP) for a range of different temperature bands, depending on the intended system operation.

Air Handling Units

AHU’s (Air Handling Units) must meet the requirements of Eco Design regulation 1254/2014 for ventilation units.

This mandates maximum levels of specific internal fan power andminimum levels of heat reclaim / recovery efficiency.
